Reading:
"The wrapped gift was a new watch. A watch made by Sunto mountaineering. Called the Core."
As seen crawling with these sentences on page 313 of the book The Mountain Between Us (The mountain that separates us), I forgot about the time of the characters in the novel. Instead I thought the clock that the author of that work had given my husband several years ago.
was a Timex Ironman with more buttons and functions that I could learn to use. Rick and I met Charles during our undergraduate studies at the university. The two men became good friends playing darts, basketball, sharing Jesus, talking about Walker Percy, going hunting, listening to music and listening to the academic discourses of the communication theory of Dr. Brown.
frequently seen in the computer lab engrossed in conversation. Or, laughing so much I can not sound out of their mouths open. The computer screen was always Rick terms of academic discourse and research. Most times, the display of Charles revealed he was writing short stories. I still remember the first I read. A play about her sister Annie called Humble Pie (retracted) ...
The clock was accompanied by a letter. In a poetic in that only a novelist friend could capture on paper, Charles explained all the features of Rick who had inspired. All challenges were faced and overcome together. U much valued friendship Rick. He included a Bible verse, "As iron sharpens iron, and the man in dealing with men" (Proverbs 27:17, NIV).
Charles explained that only gave him the watch to an exclusive group of men during their life, men who had also been a source of inspiration for him. "Iron Men" were called. Men who had sharpened. Charles also described in his letter, each of them worthy of admiration in a unique way. Rick was not sure to deserve such a comparison. Of course, it was not really a comparison but a celebration. A symbolic display of friendship and appreciation.
Rick used the clock until the battery ran out. Then I changed the battery. I continued to use until the belt broke, then changed his belt. After all, is not an everyday thing that someone denominated Iron Man. But every time I looked at his watch Rick, Charles made that statement.
We ran the study period grade and both men were forced to go each their own. Rick went to Wilmington to teach in the university, Charles went to Jacksonville and eventually began publishing his works. Very touching stories. Stories of people whose heart is torn and find healing hope. Stories that show the reader what is true love.
Charles said in an interview that a force that impelled him to write his novels was to answer the question, "How is the truly love someone?" The lives of the characters who live in the stories of Charles respond to that question. And the life of Charles answered that question.
This week I asked Rick, "What do you think are the strengths of Charles as a friend?" For a moment, Rick paused and then said, "He is honest in its own and requires you to be honest in yours too." He then added, "and know how to love."
sharpening seems that goes both ways.
